Interview with Giuseppe Romagnoli, Serpro

Giuseppe presented the use of Plone within the Brazilian government at the Plone Conference 2004 in Vienna. He and I chatted before and after and I collected the responses into an interview. Check it out if you want to learn a bit more about Plone inside a big government.

Also, Giuseppe sent me a link to the video showing a blind Serpro staff member demonstrating Plone at Comdex. This video spot was shown on TV.

Open call for open source entrepreneurs

Next month I'm giving a speech on open source business models. I'd like to collect information from others about what's going on in this field.

Send me an email (paul at zope-europe.org) if you'd like to chat.

Specifically, I want to hear from the owners of small businesses in the open source space, particularly in content management. I have some theories about some of the challenges at hand and I'd like to learn more about the issues faced by this group. Too often we read reports from MBA students who haven't had to make payroll, so I want to get a more personal recount from the practitioners.

Even more specifically, I'm looking for examples (in any industry) where the group of individuals and small companies that created a product, then created a consortium to deliver the whole product. Yves Moisan sent an example (Desjardins in Canadian banking), though I don't think this group created the product.

Zope brochure (German)

Jens sent me a note from DZUG about Jan Ulrich's flyer that he produced using Scribus. Looks like DZUG did a very fine job!

HTML Overlays

For the pipelines stuff I worked on before the castle sprint, I came up with a simple system for "theme-ing" a Zope site. The idea is that skinning is too broad and uses one big facility for covering both what the component developer does and the corporate identity person at the customer does. Throwing them into the same soup has some drawbacks.

I had proposed a simple step, just before the page goes out the door, to hack the HTML document before it is returned. Daniel "Nvu" Glazman has a very similar idea, but with the assembly done on the browser in JS. Move this idea to the server and you have my "theme" model.

CALIBRE keynote

I'm giving the keynote at the CALIBRE conference in The Hague on Nov 19. This is the "International Conference Assessing the Role of Libre/Open Source Software for European Industry". It is in conjunction with two other EU conferences, one for the upcoming round of IST funding and another for open source and e-government.

CALIBRE asked me to talk about the long-past decision to go open source and compare it to the outcome. The audience will be around 100-150 decision makers in Europe, including members of the Dutch EU President's office and the Irish parliament.

In conjunction with this, I hope to collect some points of view from the business owners involved in open source CMS.
