Nothing to see here, move along

When I got back from LinuxWorld last week, the folks in the #plone channel immediately started teasing me about making it on Tony's list. All I can say is, if the list is sorted alphabetically, next time I'll have to change my last name to "__Everitt".

Obviously I'm thankful for the mention, and that Tony got the meme right (ZEA as a "federation of professional services firms") plus the challenge we face.

Bland is dumb

Barry R and co. at Porter Novelli have started The Thicket, now one of my favorite weblog sites. Basically, they are trying to see how PR agencies and marketing can mix with open source and online chit-chat.

In the post I linked to, Barry discusses LinuxWorld, which he and I were at last week. He says: "They take something like Linux and the industry built up around it and agree to use the same innocuous terms like integration, agility, ROI, and many many others."

I completely agree. Joel, Nate, and I were listening to one keynote, and the drone of banal catchphrases was literally painful. There was utterly nothing about that exec's pitch that stood out relative to anything else. Is there a reason that being "legit" and corporate has to mean putting your audience into a boredom-induced coma?

I hope we get a chance to learn from Barry and Porter Novelli (who has donated a large amount of time for Plone this year), to find ways to improve our communications along the lines he describes. Read some of the other posts from Barry and Jules and keep an eye on their weblog.

Silva 1.2 released, hooray!

The fine folks at Infrae (a Zope Europe managing partner) have just released a new version of Silva, their XML-oriented CMS for Zope. 3 major new features: improved versioning, the ability to subscribe to get notified when a page is published/re-published, and internationalization of user interface.

I had a chance recently to chat with the Infrae folks about the directions they are taking for storage and rendering of structured content. Exciting stuff. If people are looking for XML in Zope with an attractive interface, contact Infrae.

Zope Weekend 5 in Japan

Takeshi sent me some pictures to the seminar he helped organize in Japan last weekend. I particularly like the picture of someon's baby daughter curled up next to Andy's Plone book. For the conference, I recorded a brief QuickTime greeting (21 Mb).

Hope for stopping license pollution?

Norm Patriquin, a Plone Foundation board member who's with CA, sent me a link about an effort to cut back on the overpopulation of licenses. Sam Greenblatt from CA, who helped start the Plone Foundation, is working on getting the OSI and the projects to actively cut back on the number of used licenses.

As Mike Olsen from Sleepycat said about all the licenses, "It's confusing as hell to explain to customers." Amen.
