Interview with John Merrells, creator of Berkeley DB XML

Last year I visited Oxford quite a few times, giving me a chance to have lunch with John Merrells on a few occasions. John is the creator of Berkeley DB XML. I interviewed him on his background, how Berkeley DB XML came into being, and how XML databases can affect the design of content management applications.

Upcoming activities for Z3 ECM

At the EuroPython sprint in Sweden later this month, we are having a Z3 ECM sprint during the days before. This is another step in a series of Z3 ECM events going back to last year's EuroPython:

  • The "Zope 3 and Content Management" panel at last year's conference
  • The Castle Sprint, where the different CMS projects came together to talk about the idea of a common framework.
  • The Paris Sprint, originally intended to make progress on the Castle Sprint ideas, but instead laying the groundwork by including Five in the upcoming Zope 2.8 release.

As an historical note, if I had to choose a point at which Z3 ECM sprang into existence, I personally would probably attribute it to philiKON at the Castle Sprint. He had the idea, started discussing it with everyone, and from that came the Goldegg mailing list to further the discussion.

The Z3 ECM sprint at EPC2005 will start to tackle some of the deeper issues. Particularly, Florent and Michel talking about repositories. We'll also use the face-to-face time to talk about governance issues: where will the project live, how is it organized, etc.

Alan and I were chatting yesterday and he's interested in a sprint related to Z3 ECM, Five, and future CMF. Basic question: how to do huge piles of content.

Just to clarify: Z3 ECM is not about replacing CPS, Silva, and Plone with some new product. It isn't a product. It is about a shared framework, like the CMF, for the commodity parts of modern content management.
