Biggest Zope milestone in years: Zope 2.8

I forgot to highlight an event that went by somewhat quietly this weekend. Andreas Jung from Zopyx made the Zope 2.8 release. This has two pivotal aspects, both with some serious long-term benefits.

First, the MVCC work by Jim and Tim at ZC could make a huge difference in performance for high-traffic sites. This is a big improvement and one that took serious work over an extended period to make it land. Well done, ZC!

For developers, this release brings the technologies of Zope 3, into Zope 2, using the bridge technology called Five. The Five project is the brainchild of Martijn Faassen at Infrae, who doggedly promoted it, got it working, then attracted a number of other developers. Five continues its work in the Z3 Base, a popular collaboration area for numerous Zope 3 projects.

With Five, you can use the Zope 3 advances and high-quality development environment, inside Zope 2. Thus, existing systems can gradually make use of this new work. Related projects in the Z3 Base include a number of integration projects related to CMF, being done by Tres Seaver (creator of CMF), Lennart Regebro of Nuxeo, Sidnei da Silva of Enfold and Plone, and Philipp von Weitershausen.

This is one of the most interesting parts. During the next 9 months or so, CMS projects such as Silva, CPS, and Plone will likely start shipping releases with Five-enabled software. The process of migration will likely be gradual, but that's what most customers want.

Anyway, congratulations to the folks that produced the Zope 2.8 release: Jim Fulton, Christian Theune, Tim Peters, Fred Drake Jr., Marc Hammond, Sidnei da Silva, Tres Seaver, Stefan Holek, Chris McDonough, and most of all, Andreas Jung the release manager.

Blast from the Past: Jerry Spicklemire

Rya from Kobie.com, a direct response marketing firm in St. Petersburg, Florida, sent in a note about their operations moving to Plone: "We were attracted to Plone[base ']s content management features which allowed the IT, Creative, and Marketing Departments to all work together in the production and design of our new site."

I wrote back commenting that most of my college roommates (including Rob Page, ZC CEO) were from the Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater area. Rya wrote back and said, in the correspondence, noted that Jerry Spicklemire, author of the 2001 book "Zope: Web Application Development and Content Management", is now working with them.

If I recall correctly, Jerry and his brother Steve (another co-author of the book) were the creators of the infamous "Zope-on-a-rope" giveaway, where they put a colored, circle Z on a bar of soap, on a rope. Hilarious times from Zope days past.
