TimesOnline: "Israel's armed forces have been ordered by Ariel Sharon, the prime minister, to be ready by the end of March for possible strikes on secret uranium enrichment sites in Iran, military sources have revealed."

Telegraph: "The European Union secretly allowed the United States to use transit facilities on European soil to transport 'criminals' in 2003, according to a previously unpublished document. The revelation contradicts repeated EU denials that it knew of 'rendition' flights by the CIA."

When decisions are made in secret there is no democracy. When those decisions also concern illegal acts, this undermines the roots of justice and democracy to the core.

"Greenpeace is calling for the World Trade Organisation to halt the proposed Non-Agricultural Market Access (NAMA) negotiations."

Existing policies are focused on increasing opportunities for companies, in short on increasing their profits. The past decades have shown that the free-market policies of privatization and deregulation have only favoured the rich and made the poor even poorer. That is a fact. There is no such thing as a free market. What is meant is a market free for corporations in the richest countries. What they are giving to the rich, they are taking from the poor. Poverty is on the increase.
AlterNet: "In its current form, 'free trade' is about creating a back door to pressure countries to adhere to the economic policies of the 'Washington Consensus', whether they're popular or not."

Forbes: "Former South African president and Nobel peace laureate Nelson Mandela has urged the World Trade Organization (WTO) to do more to fight poverty, on the eve of ministerial-level talks here."

Another aspect of trade and commerce is the increase of crime among the corporations.
AlterNet: "On issues like war crimes, torture, toxic dumping and stifling freedom of speech, corporations like Coca Cola, Chevron and Philip Morris are way out ahead of the rest."
