Daniel Barenboim conducted the Wiener Philharmoniker New Year's Concert today. During the concert he spoke out for peace in the Middle East. The whole of Europe and many more countries broadcast this concert, but Israel did not.
Earlier he had said that the conflict in the Middle East cannot be solved militarily. He is right. Barenboim has taken Palestinian citizenship and said he believed his new status could serve as a model for peace between the two peoples. His West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is an example of cooperation between Israeli and Arab musicians.
Barenboim's letter to the press (fortunately there are bloggers who provide us with the original letter, not part of one sentence like the mass media did).
Not only is Barenboim one of our best conductors and musicians, but he has his heart and mind in the right place.
"Israeli military retaliation is inhuman, immoral, and does not guarantee Israel's security."
