Independent: "The population of the United States will pass 300 million today, or tomorrow. No one knows exactly where, no one know precisely when. It is a milestone for sure but is this a cause for celebration or anxiety?
But many experts say passing the 300 million milestone should be a wake-up call that demands a reappraisal of the extraordinary, unparalleled rate of consumption by the world's largest economy and its third largest by population.
As an economic model for the rest of the world to follow - in particular the rapidly developing economies of China and India - it is unsustainable, they say."

Statewatch: "The USA has used the successful challenge against the legal basis of the 2004 EU-US agreement on the transfer of PNR (passenger name record) in the European Court of Justice by the European Parliament to put forward significant changes - to which the EU has agreed.
However, the Agreement (Annex 2) and the letter from the USA (Annex 3) show the USA has used this change to the legal basis to exact changes in the operation of the agreement. These are based on changes in the US laws and the demands of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
So if the law changes in the USA - as it has done since 2004 - then the USA can change how it processes data and who it can be passed to.
What is particularly outrageous is that if the law changes in the USA the way the agreement is implemented changes too without any renegotiation - which is very worrying given the nature of new laws which remove the rights of suspects including habeas corpus."

TruthDig: "The aircraft carrier Eisenhower, accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage, guided-missile destroyer USS Mason and the fast-attack submarine USS Newport News, is, as I write, making its way to the Straits of Hormuz off Iran. The ships will be in place to strike Iran by the end of the month. It may be a bluff. It may be a feint. It may be a simple show of American power. But I doubt it.
War with Iran - a war that would unleash an apocalyptic scenario in the Middle East - is probable by the end of the Bush administration."
Rationally a war against Iran would be madness, but the point is that the White House cabal is not rational or human or freedom-loving, they are stark raving mad.
Guardian: "The BBC is to launch a television news channel in Iran, funded by the British government to the tune of £15m a year."
The agitprop necessary to support a regime change? While the NHS is having severe financial difficulties, they are wasting money abroad.
