Orkut optimism and the Blog Sceptic

joi ito blogs about meeting someone who's got a life because of orkut: had 3 dates so far, arranged three more, got some great business activity partners and more friends. that sounds too good to be true, but since joi says so, i'll take it at face value. (yet, i'm wondering where are my own dates and my own business partners. hell yes, where are you? do i look scary or morbid or what?) others though don't. the blog sceptic started his own blog which focuses on what else? blog scepticism. he he.

Rotten Politics

these day, everyone seems to have the flu, discussing politics and wondering if the Internet is bound to change the rules of the games, giving rise to a whole new level of civic participation. i still have lots of respect for what howard dean tries to pull together, and i approve the fact that some professional politicians show interest in how they can put the internet to work not just for fundraising purposes, but for communicating with the multitude. but as soon as i turn the telly on, or when i read the papers, all my enthusiasm fades away, and my illussions of a higher state of democratic conscioussness fall apart. in a way, Dr. Gonzo had said it all back in 72 when he wrote:

How many of those goddamn elections are we going to have to write off as lame but 'regrettably necessary' holding actions? And how many more of those stinking, double-downer sideshows will we have to go through before we can get ourselves straight enough to put together some king of national election that will give me and the at least 20 million people I tend to agree with a chance to vote for something, instead of always being faced with that old familiar choice between the lesser of two evils.

nice excuse to party

today, it's a rather special day in greece. it's the first day of the greek carnaval whose actvities culminate in the worldwide known carnaval of patra (second only to rio de janeiro). everyone's flocking to the streets, partying till the early morning hours. people get all dressed up, in their nice funny costumes, making jokes, spraying each other with paint, throwing water, and ridiculing everything. the tradition also dictates that unless you cook meat today, your pans (all kinds of pans, whether you cook in a saucepan, frying pan, wok, casserole or grill pan makes no difference) are going to be full of holes by tomorrow morning. nice excuse to eat planty of meatballs, eh? i dunno about vegeterians, about my menu today consists of flesh. the tradition also says that today you have to drink a lot. another nice excuse to get hammered.
