I got a weblog for Christmas!

It is now after midnight here in Oslo and today is December 24. The Christmas tree has been decorated, the Christmas stockings for my girls Kristine and Maria (aged 5&7) filled with candies and everything is ready for the big day!

It has been a really good winter so far with snow and temperatures around -10 degrees Celsius. My daughters really like cross-country skiing and we bought new skiing shoes for my oldest Kristine.  Saturday the whole family went to the hills to go skiing and I discovered that it is not just in our industry where there are incompatible standards. Apparently there are two types of bindings for cross-country skis and the shoes we bought did not fit the binding. They look compatible but are a bit different so they don’t fit. We ended up going back to the city to buy new skis and were back some hours later. It was now dark but we had a very nice trip with a full moon giving us some light.

Let’s hope that our industry can make compatible standards that make products not only look compatible but also work smoothly together.

I think it was Andrew Tannenbaum (good name for the season) who once said that the good thing about standards is that there is so many to choose from...
