Friend and publisher Whil Hentzen runs the Great Lakes Great Database Workshop. I've had the privilege of speaking at the conference the past couple of years. This last November, at the closing session, he passed out 3 CDs of Red Hat 8.0 for everyone to learn from. Reaction has been pretty interesting, with a number of people finally getting around to trying out Linux now that someone finally shoved disks into their hands, and they didn't have to shell out money or spend the time download ISO images and burning CDs.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Well, the weather forecast is for 7" to 20" of snow, and it's been coming down in fits and starts all day. I'm all for the White Christmas thing, but I think we're on our way to a record-breaking season, 11 days into winter. A big storm on Christmas (a foot+) followed by this one. Glad I'm staying home today.

David Pogue reviews another attempt at the PDA-laptop hybrid: a full keyboard and a small display and Palm OS! NY Times: And Now, the Portable Desktop PC, Up to a Point. Microsoft may have quite a challenge explaining to the masses how this wireless screen differs from last fall's Tablet PC, whose looks, marketing language, core audience of well-heeled techies and manufacturer roster are confusingly similar to those of the Smart Display.
