Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Back to Work

I have never liked going back to work on the first day of the new year. Probably because I've had too much fun being away. Bowl games have always been a contributing factor, too. The real onset of winter is another reason for my blue attitude. They write songs about magical Christmas snow. There doesn't seem to be anything special about January storms.

For the past few years I've tried to make the best of the new year. Without this effort I would be tempted to take a long, lazy slide deep into January. Monday morning I got to the office at 5:00 AM. It's amazing how few cars are on the road at that hour. It's also amazing how much can be done when I'm all alone in the office.

By 7:00 I had reviewed my backlog of e-mail, replied to a few, begun a major office cleaning project and taken my first load of old magazines and files out to the dumpster. Walking back to the building I found myself wondering what the real time was. It was just as dark as when I'd arrived two hours earlier. That surprised me. Still, I got a lot done and watched the darkness turn to a dull grey day a mere 90 minutes later.

Getting out the door and getting a few things done early has turned my attitude about beginning the new year from blah to enthusiastic. There is a big list of things to do over the next few months and it would be easy to feel overwhelmed. Getting a good jump on the new year is my way of coping.......
