Yesterday afternoon after listening to my my 6 year old daughter read a story to me, she got inspired and wanted to type the words for the story into the computer. She sat in front of my wife's iMac and double-clicked on the icon that I setup for her that launches a blank Word document where she can type things in a large font that she's thinking about. After she'd typed for ten minutes or so, from another room I reminded her that it would be a good idea to save her work. I called to her, "Just click on the save button. It's the picture of the little disk at the top." She just said, "Which one, Daddy?" I repeated, again from the other room, "the disk one at the top." But I didn't hear the telltale chime that Word for the Mac makes when you save a document so I went into the computer room and realized that she had never seen a 3.5" floppy disk in her life, so had no idea what I meant by the "disk one". She can pick a DVD or a CD and play it just fine, but the image of a 3.5" floppy disk was just a random symbol to her. When I pointed to the one to click on, she said, "Oh, you mean the box?". "Yeah, honey, just click on the box to save." Maybe the computer industry's "save" iconography is due for an update!
