Horizontal thinkers will observe a situation and wonder "what does this relate to" or "what can I do with this." They want a broader view from their current standpoint. Vertical thinkers will observe a situation and see how it relates to their trajectory up or down. They will think "will this make me money" or "do I have enough political capital to pull this off." The world is something to climb up or down.
