Here's Broadband in Your Pocket. A 3G wireless chip from Australia's Bell Labs promises to spawn cell phones that can receive sharp, real-time video and other data at speeds that beat a home broadband connection. It's faster than Wi-Fi, but analysts wonder if it will catch on. By Elisa Batista. [Wired News]

Burkard Schmitt writes about the lack of consensus within Europe. He also argues in favour of a more powerful foreign and security policy, and more united European decision making. Worth a look.

New Scientist is reporting that using a technique called quantitive genetics, researchers have found that due to the effects of global warming female squirrels now give birth on average 18 days earlier in the year than their great-great-grandmothers. Is global warming affecting human evolution?

Polly Toynbee writes about the galvanising of European public opinion against a war in Iraq. She argues that that opposition has united Europe like little else. Except of course for Britain. She goes on to say that without the UN a war is illegitimate:
Without a UN resolution, the rightness of the cause is clear cut. Only the UN confers legitimacy on any invasion and afterwards the UN will be essential during a long and difficult occupation.
If only the UN were a fair and unbiased body - then we might have progress, rather than the main powers using it as a puppet for their policies.

This article, posted on Slashdot, talks about the ins and outs of Weblogging, its growth - and its eventual and inevitable coming demise. Interesting statistical analysis. But can I not be happy with a couple of thousand people a month? Makes me happy anyway. I think this article may be part of a study to see how many hits he gets.

The Register is reporting that a Tablet PC that was stolen from a computer shop has been recovered using tracking information. Once the stolen Tablet connected to the Net, a tamper resistant agent on the hard drive logged the IP address and sent the information the security firms servers. Police then obtained a phone number and address through AOL and an arrest was made. Portable computers that cry 'Help'?

Jon E Wilson, a lecturer in history at King's College London writes a piece in today's Guardian. He is unhappy with the way the British Empire has been presented on Channel 4's history programme, by Neil Ferguson. He argues that far from having a good effect on the world, the British Empire succeeded only in making the world more unequal. A thought inspiring article.
