Here's the kind of thing that makes you feel safe. In the NYT article Army Begins Burning of Chemical Weapons in Alabama Town, there's this little nugget:
Army officials have said the process is completely safe, but just to make sure, Alabama officials issued protective hoods to residents living near the incinerator, which just made many people feel worse.

Perhaps I'm a bit pessimistic, but the first image to come to my head was of Levittown houses with families sitting around in their dens all wearing guillotine hoods. My next was images of folks with plastic vegetable bags over their heads. Probably not what was used, however. How long are they supposed to wear these hoods? How do they know if it's safe to take 'em off, assuming they were reasonably supposed to put them on in the first place? Did they provide protective hoods for the gardens? the pets? the rivers? the trees? Imagine every blade of grass with it's own protective hood. Do they get to keep their hoods or do they have to give them back? Suppose you didn't follow the news, or even suppose that you did, and some army guys show up at your house suggesting you put this hood on. Are there any insignias or logos? Are there any up on ebay?

I dunno....

Yet again, uggabugga makes sense. In this post he contrasts Bush's vacation time to the rest of the nation, using an article from the Washington Post.

As handy as the comparison is, I'd really recommend reading the whole Post article. The author, Joe Robinson, clearly has an agenda, but so far it sounds like one I could support. For more on it, check out his website, worktolive.info.

How much vacation time do you get?

Cripes! can you believe it's been almost a month since I've posted? Where have I been? It's the usuals: work, family, activism, etc. Other than periodically swallowing a bunch of news and blogs online, I've been out.

I should mention that one of the tings I've been spending a lot of my time on is radio. I do a weekly radio show at WRPI called the Tangential Mind, mainly focusing on psychedelic music, which is a kick and I dig it. But I'm also part of a group which is starting a low-power FM community radio station. We've already received our construction permit from the FCC, so we're cracking away at organizing and creating. It's a lot of work, but I'm pretty damn excited. We should be on air in about a year. If you're interested in helping out, let me know. If you're local, come to a meeting; if you're from anywhere and you're in a band, want to do a benefit show? drop me a line.

Radio of the people, by the people, and for the people!
