Most of the blogs I stumble upon and wander through are created by folks whose outside life I know absolutely nothing about. For that matter, far too many blogkeepers, myself included, fail to relay any sense of who they are other than the content of their posts. Who are they? Why is it relevant that I read this? What makes you a trusted source? What else do you do with your life?

I find that contextualization and color useful and interesting and it ultimately makes the blog more satisfying to me. Perhaps then, I might, one of these days, get around to putting up a smidge of info about myself. Someday.

Taking a moment to look back on those two paragraphs, I realize that this gives some insight into the blogs I read. I don't read diary blogs. I don't read blogs about what people had for breakfast and how their cat is feeling or who got drunk and slept with who.

Why not? Well, I don't know any of those folks. Until very recently, the only blog I read that I actually knew the person first is a joshua tree in every pot. But now, I've discovered blogs by two friends of mine who I'd fallen out of touch with. Both are personal in nature--in that they focus more on their personal existence rather than commenting relentlessly on the outside world.

The first is dzur, home to Chris Hull. Chris was a year behind me at Simon's Rock, spent a couple of years there as SysAdmin, moved to Boston and I lost touch. Well, lo-and-behold, he exists. If you know him, you'll want to check it out. If not, it may not appeal to you, but who's to say? I'm psyched to find it and him.

The second is Cooking with a Scientist, which sports the foodly musing of Matt DeGennaro. He was in my class at Simon's Rock. Has bounced from coast to coast and now finds himself settled in NYC, where he is working on his Phd in Developmental Genetics (oy!) and apparently eating quite well. Even if you don't know Matt, checking out his blog may cause your mouth to water a bit. He does seem to be on a bit of a Mexican kick.

I'm sure there are plenty of fine cooking blogs--I've never looked. What I do know is that Chris Barrus has a fondness for food as he periodically notes.

What I also know is it's late and I do like prosciutto.
