I signed up for Friendster (hey, everyone's doing it) and in the process of filling out their personal info form, found this interesting. Under "Status" your options are:
Single/Divorced/Separated
In a Relationship
Married
Open Marriage
I've never seen "open marriage" as an option before on any of the profiles and surveys and tax forms I've ever filled out. Makes me wonder about this friendster place...

I've always enjoyed reading Howard Zinn's writings. He has such a sense of person and of humanity. Reading them, I can always sense the person beind the words--the humor, the intelligence, and the insight into what guides us as people.
In a recent essay for The Progressive in which he calls for a renewed definition of patriotism, he recalls the words of Mark Twain, another person who so ablely fits that description.
Mark Twain, having been called a "traitor" for criticizing the U.S. invasion of the Philippines, derided what he called "monarchical patriotism." He said: "The gospel of the monarchical patriotism is: 'The King can do no wrong.' We have adopted it with all its servility, with an unimportant change in the wording: 'Our country, right or wrong!' We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had--the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it, all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism."

Sadly my trusty, reliable ball mouse has passed away, awash in a sea of drinking water to fizz and ozonate and lie useless beside my computer.
After two days of mourning I went out and bought a replacement from one of the many mice caged on the shelf. The new jobby is a sleek black and silver jobby exuding a pleasantly trippy red light. Ah, optical.
