Of the new national Do Not Call law, the NYT says: "Interviews with people who have registered their numbers indicate that they feel a combination of anger and pity. They hate to be impolite to callers..." Pity? You have to be kidding. Okay, perhaps some passing pity for someone who finds themselves trying to make a living telemarketing. Certainly no reason, or point, in being rude. But rude is not the same as brusque and efficient: "I'm sorry, I don't accept telephone solicitations", then hang up. And if a sense of pity is consideration, well, you aren't doing them any favors by chatting with them on the phone when you have no intention of buying.
