VIETNAM: FRATTINI, Hanoi should allow UN access to the Central Highlands 11/04/2004 | Radio Radicale |  www.radioradicale.it

Minister Frattini – who in a few days will meet with his Vietnamese counterpart – stated that the “Italian Government will try to explain to Hanoi that it is within its interest to maintain a good relationship with Italy and the European Union and for this reason Vietnam should allow to the UN High Commissioner of Refugee immediate access and action in the areas interested by the protests".

In an interview on Easter day with the Italian Radio Radicale, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini addressed the issue of the peaceful demonstrations staged by thousands of indigenous Montagnard people in Vietnam saying that "Italy will exert our influence with strong determination". The Italian Government and the Italian Embassy in Hanoi "will demand today that the Vietnamese Government allow the United Nations access to the monitoring the situation in the Central Highlands”.

On Saturday, Vietnam saw a series of demonstrations, the biggest of which was in Dak Lak province, was organized to protest the lack for religious freedom and to call on the international community to intervene to defend the fundamental rights of the various ethnic groups that live in the region and in particular those of the so-called Montagnards. This region – the Central Highlands have been sealed off since 2001.

On the high risk of a mass exodus towards the Cambodia, where the boarder is currently closed, Mr. Frattini announced that the “Italian diplomatic corp. will be activated to assist the excellent work of the UNHCR and to ensure that the Cambodian authorities will not create obstacles in the event of  the escape of thousands of people towards the frontier, which is currently under strict control".

As far as Europe is concerned, Mr. Frattini added that "in cases as tragic as this one, the EU should demonstrate a sense of responsibility and efficiency that European citizens expects. Tomorrow our permanent mission to Brussels will urge the EU to act swiftly. This time Europe should act swiftly, more swiftly, that in the past.”

Christians Around World Celebrate Easter [VOA]
In a rare occurrence, both major branches of Christianity are celebrating Easter, the holiest day in the Christian calendar, on the same day today. Eastern Orthodox and western Christians usually observe the holy day on different Sundays, a function of calendar dynamics and different traditions. This year, the Gregorian and Julian calendars have converged, creating a single celebration of the day Christians believe Jesus Christ rose from the dead.
Western Christians, including Catholics and Protestants, celebrate Easter according to the later Gregorian calendar - instituted by Pope Gregory 13 in 1582. Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter according to the old Julian calendar, named after Julius Caesar - who established it in 46 B.C.

From Athens to Singapore and Australia to Siberia, Christians are celebrating the resurrection of the son of God. [more]
