CHINA: Censorship stepped up to target blogging [RFA]
Chinese authorities have closed two sites hosting blogs, in an escalation of Internet censorship that began with a crack down on discussion forums. In targeting blogs - personal pages where Internet-users post their own comments on the news - the government seems determined to claw back the meagre gains of the past few years in terms of individual freedoms. DISSIDENT: CHINA'S DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT SHOULD FOLLOW TAIWAN'S [RFA]
The pro-democracy movement in China should follow a pattern similar to that in Taiwan during the past 20 years, released Chinese dissident Wang Youcai told RFA in a recent interview. "I think if in future China can take the same sort of direction that Taiwan did, the process under which they set up opposition parties, I think this is the sort of direction to take," Wang told RFA's Mandarin service after being released on medical parole from the Zhejiang No. 1 Prison in Quzhou City. A.F.L.-C.I.O. to Press Bush for Penalties Against China. It's about time! I can't believe that China has been able to get away with their behavior for so long. In the long run, our failing to challenge them to meet basic standards on worker safety, hours and wages doesn't just hurt workers in the US and China, it is bad for workers *everywhere*, all over the world, in my opinion.
