What does the Lord require of us? (Two out of three is not enough.)

What does the Lord require of us?  (Two out of three is not enough.)

  • To Act Justly
  • To Love Mercy
  • To Walk Humbly With Your God
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.  Micah 6:8

Interesting that this verse from Micah states that we are required to do all three of these actions - not just one or two - or which ever combination we deem appropriate.   If we truly seek to do what the Lord requires in addressing the incredibly interesting, intriguing, and imperative challenges we face as Christians, this verse suggests that we need to :
  • Ensure we have a solid understanding of what our Lord considers "just" - using his word (the Bible) as our basis for this understanding.
  • Ensure that we approach discussions, debates, decisions with not only justice in mind - but also with mercy in mind (Mercy = One not getting something they deserve based on what they have done/not done).
  • Ensure that we walk humbly with our God - walk - not run or race - and humbly - based on our "relationship to God"  (not our "relationship to an idea, group of people, set of values, etc.") - seeking to allow him to work through us - not seeking attention for ourselves - and allowing him to use us to draw others to him.
Can we achieve three of three?

Well, not on our own, but as Christians, we do not have to do it on our own.

I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
