WIRELESS NETWORKS
QUALCOMM Congratulates Verizon Wireless on Deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Networks in Major U.S. Cities
This is a significant announcement, in that it begins to present competition to that other wireless technology, wi-fi, on the basis of bandwidth. This third-generation (3G), high-speed data network, marketed under the name BroadbandAccess, will be available to customers in metropolitan Washington, D.C. and San Diego (the putative "wireless capital of the US") beginning Wednesday, October 1, 2003.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a data-optimized evolution of CDMA2000 1X that provides peak speeds up to 2.4 Mbps and typical speeds of 300-600 kbps at a lower cost per byte than any other 3G technology available today, an increasingly important factor as wireless Internet use grows in popularity.
CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is a digital cell network standard developed and patented by Qualcomm which will provide its MSM5500 and MSM6500 chipset and system software solutions for BroadbandAccess.
1xEV-DO is compatible with cdmaOne(TM) and CDMA2000 1X networks (e.g., Sprint PCS). Products supporting this technology can be seen at 3gToday.

Doctor Recommended: PDAs Are Good Medicine
AvantGo (acquired by iAnywhere, a Sybase company) is pitching wireless sync'ing to Enterprise apps via handhelds. It also offers more than 2,500 channels of content, including medical- specific channels for news, health updates and medical research.
With nearly one in three doctors owning PDAs, a recent AvantGo® survey uncovers why medical professionals are among the fastest adopters of mobile technology. High on their list of mobile requirements were the ability to access clinical information and the latest medical news anytime, anywhere.
