On rolling your own

Clearly I am no expert "spinster." But with one sleeve, a collar and button bands remaining on my Kool-Aid Handspun Cardie, I love the fact that I can just say, whoops, and make more. Above are three soon-to-be skeins of Falkland wool single-ply waiting for their aqua Kool-Aid bath!

Fibonacci Sequence and why we should care?

The Fibonacci Sequence is a mathematical series of number discovered by...who else, Mr. Fibonacci. It goes like this: 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21, etc. Add the preceding two numbers and you get the next. See?

For any number larger than three, the ratio between any two consecutive numbers is 1:1.6. Interesting, you say, but what does this have to do with knitting?

The above ratio--1:1.6--happens to be the Golden Ratio, the height to width relationship the ancient Greeks favored in building, a ratio very pleasing to the eye.

So, the next time you stripe something, try using the Fibonacci Sequence (you might want to repeat it after you hit 13 unless you want monster rows).

Daily war rant: It is an act of hubris to anticipate the reaction of a people under attack. As colonizers, we must remember that even repressive self rule may be preferable to subjugating oneself to the other. Wouldn't we feel that way?

Knitting library must have

Saw Deb Robson at the Colorado Authors' League luncheon yesterday. In tow, she had her proof of Priscilla Gibson-Roberts new edition of Knitting in the Old Way. The two are collaborating on the rerelease of this hard-to-find knitting classic.

Some background: A knitting anthropologist, Gibson-Roberts has scoured the world for folk designs and then preserved and enhanced them through her various books. Famous for her socks, her books Ethnic Socks and Stockings: A Compendium of Eastern Design and Technique and Simple Socks: Plain and Fancy are revelations. Robson says Simple Socks will forever end one-sock syndrome because it empowers knitters to knit mindlessly rather than finish that second sock glued to charts and patterns.

Filled with Gibson-Roberts charming illustration, Knitting in the Old Way is similarly freeing. It describes sweater design and construction, fit, integrating charts and graphs, while offering eye-popping Northern European motifs for knitters to incorporate into their work. She's also added some smashing new sweaters; there's a Finnish number that's a stunner. Keep your eyes peeled, the book is due out this summer from Nomad Press.

Daily war rant: On "Fresh Air," Heard veteran war correspondent Joseph Galloway, author of We Were Soliders Once and Young, about his experiences in Viet Nam . He offered some especially pointed criticism for Sec. Rumsfeld, saying Rumsfeld's military strategy in this Gulf conflict is simply wrong-headed. That he has completely miscalculated the level of resistance American and British troops would receive in Iraq and not committed enough resources to the effort. Go listen.
