I've just seen two great yet very different movies.

I'm only glad that I saw them on two different nights, giving me time to enjoy each to the full. I don't recommend them as a double feature. It would be too much like eating the world's best sour pickles with fine fresh homemade strawberry ice cream: wonderful apart, not doing justice to either together...

1. I just got done watching Bride and Prejudice, a terrific film. It's wonderful, amazing, joyous, heartwarming, indescribable, with a terrific cast, director and crew. Even the outtakes at the end are the best! Among the excellent cast was the incomparable Naveen Andrews (US viewers may know him from The English Patient and many other movie and television roles). Singing, dancing, fine acting, and an excellent adaptation of a great story well-observed.

If you haven't seen it, go out and see it at once! And if you have seen it, see it again! What a superb movie!

2. The movie I saw yesterday afternoon was Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, Tom Stoppard's terrific play, with Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, and Richard Dreyfuss, each, as the folk tales put it, better than all the rest... Brush up your Hamlet, tune up your ears, sharpen up your wits, and indulge your sense of irony, your willingness to see things on many levels at once, and your feelings of tragic inevitability... or is that what it is? 'It seems as though there must have been one moment when we could have said No... but we missed it.'

Don't say No to this great film. The movie came out in 1990, but has only been released on DVD in the last few months.

I'd give both movies way more than two thumbs up, but I've only got two thumbs to signal with. Just give each of them a day to resonate and settle.
