Gladiator: Extended Edition(2005) 17 minutes of additional footage have been added to this second DVD release of Gladiator, originally released in 2000. This footage is available on the original DVD as part of the 'deleted scenes' section. Director Ridley Scott explains before the start of the Extended version that it is not the "Director's Cut," which was essentially what was seen in the cinema as originally released; it simply adds 17 minutes of footage that had to be left out of the original release, that he thought viewers might like to see on an extended DVD. The disc contains both versions, and the extended version has its own commentary by Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. The Extended edition also offers two additional discs of supplementary material.
I keep hearing how this is such a 'boy's film.' Not so, to my eyes and ears. I like a good revenge tale as well as the next person, male or female. The film is truly well-done; it has the strength and presence of a well-researched historical novel. With a strong story, fine acting, terrific production and beautiful photography, and, very unusually in a film of great spectacle, the whole thing is very powerful and moving, never losing track of the personal and intimate while giving us the grandiose.
I'm not sure you'll find the Extended edition worth buying if you already have the original DVD edition, unless you simply MUST have Everything Gladiator. The makers say the two sets are made to complement rather than duplicate each other. It might be a good idea to rent before you buy, unless you've already made up your mind.
