The Seven Ugly Secrets...

The Seven Ugly Secrets that Ad Trackers, Hit Counters, and Web Stats Programs Do NOT Want You to Find Out!

Statistics programs such as log analyzers, ad trackers, hit counters, and web analytics software have grown tremendously in popularity over the last few years.  Virtually everyone who is marketing online uses at least one of these services in their business.

What you probably are not aware of, is that these services were built to accommodate the needs of marketers in the 1990s.  Most of the marketing principles used then have been long since abandoned by today's more successful online business owners.

As the needs of marketers changed, and as the tactics and strategies of internet marketing have changed, these services have for the most part remained the same.  As a result of this, the vast majority of today's internet marketers have not been receiving the right information and have been forced to rely on trial and error along with guesswork in order to achieve any form of success online.

Guided by outdated and obsolete technology, there are just simply too many un-answered questions.

How did these programs come about?  Lets look at a brief history lesson.

Today you have ad trackers, hit counters, log analyzers, web stats programs, analytics software, pay per click conversion tools, ROI trackers, and more.  Where did all of these come from?

Each one promises to be better than the rest.  Each one claims that by using it your profits will soar and you will become successful.  Here I am going to look at the raw truth of this matter, and show you exactly what these companies do not.

It all started back in the days long before anyone even remotely thought of the internet as a money making tool.  People had personal web sites, and they were curious to know how many times their website was being visited.  It was all about curiosity.  Someone came up with the idea of making a graphical number, which would "increase" each time a page was viewed.  The hit counter was born.

Lets go forward a few years

Now, people were realizing that it was possible to make money through the internet.  They also realized, logically, that the more people who saw their page, the more potential sales they could have.

Eventually, these hit counters were being used by savvy marketers as a way to determine how many people were visiting their website.  This way, they could know not only how much traffic they were receiving, but roughly how many visits it took before they would make a sale (their conversion rate).

This is when the problems first started to emerge!

You see, hit counters (which later gave way to log analyzers, ad trackers, web stats programs, etc) were founded on nothing more than simple curiosity people wanted to know how many visits their website was getting.  As soon as people started using hit counters as a marketing tool, they found out a very critical fact, which is our first secret.

Secret #1 : Success Online is Measured in Sales Not Visits!

What do we mean by this?  The very first myth any aspiring internet entrepreneur is bound to encounter is, "Build it, and they will come!"  This lie has caused countless online businesses to sink before they even really got started.  So many people approach online business with the mindset of just simply driving massive amounts of people (traffic) to their website.

The more the merrier.  The problem is, not all traffic is created equal.  Some of your visitors are going to be well targeted prospects who are already looking for what you have to offer, and are quite interested in buying from you.  Others will close their web browser as soon as they arrive, never even reading your headline they were not interested to begin with.

More often than not, rather than focus on smaller more interested groups of people, aspiring online marketers try to reach huge numbers of people without even the slightest effort made on reaching the "right" audience.

Its all about more traffic, more traffic, and still more traffic.

Stats companies know this.  They are fully aware that they only need to satisfy their audience, and therefore they only need to provide the most rudimentary information.  This is why these companies focus so much on TRAFFIC! Its all about traffic!

"Just send out a ton of ads, get tons of traffic and make a fortune!  Our stats program will help you do it! We will tell you how much traffic you got, where it came from, and then all you have to do is keep growing that traffic until you are a millionaire!"  Isn't this what you constantly hear from these different stats companies?

Back to reality...

What is wrong with this approach?  Every ad you send out will cost you time and money.  Your resources are limited.  Your business cannot afford useless ads!  It's that simple.  Succeeding online consists of testing your different advertisements, and keeping the best ones those traffic sources receiving GOOD traffic which results in sales.

Put simply, if you focus entirely on driving traffic to your website, you will quickly run out of resources. You absolutely must know which ads bring good traffic, and which ads bring bad traffic.

How exactly do you determine good traffic from bad traffic?

Simple.  An ad's effectiveness is measured in how many sales it brings you not in how many visits to your website.  Remember as we discussed, internet tracking technology began with a hit counter that is "How many visitors have gone to my site?".  All of the future software that came about after this is based on the same concept. This is a horrible foundation upon which to base any kind of marketing decisions.

Sales make you money.  Visitors to your website do not make you money.  So with this in mind, it makes far better business sense to track the number of SALES resulting from your ads not the number of VISITORS resulting from your ads.

All of this in mind, we are still really talking about nothing more than a glorified hit counter.  Instead of counting visitors, we are now just counting sales.

In a little while, I am going to show you a MUCH better way of doing things.  But first, on to our next secret.

Secret #2 : Traffic Stats are Only the Tip of the Iceberg!

Succeeding online is not difficult providing that you are able to see the whole picture.  A half-truth is worse than a lie.  Stats companies in today's market are so entirely focused on traffic that they are missing the most critical pieces of the puzzle.

There are four critical elements to any successful online marketing campaign.

They are:

  • How much traffic are you getting to your website (or affiliate program website)?
  • What is the quality of your traffic?
  • Where is your traffic coming from?
  • How effective is your website (or affiliate program's website) at converting your traffic into sales?

"Traffic stats" only answers the first question, and only partially at that.  A few stats software companies give you a brief glimpse into the quality of your traffic, and where the traffic is coming from but nothing you can really apply.

The missing link in all of this, is your actual website.

Please ask yourself:

"How good is my website, or my affiliate program's website at converting my traffic into sales?"

Be careful!  This is the one question upon which your online business sinks or swims.  If you can answer every other question except this one, you will fail!  You absolutely must be able to answer this one critical question.  Your success depends on it.

It doesn't matter how many visitors you have to your website.  It doesn't matter where those visitors came from or the quality of that traffic.  Your website in the end MUST make sales.  Sales put money into your bank account.  Traffic does not.

A website should be thought of like a sales department for a small company.  Each page on a website has a particular job to do bringing visitors one step closer to a sale.  Your website is only strong when each "sales person" is properly doing their job.

Make absolutely sure you understand this concept before moving on.  This is why you cannot look at your traffic before you look at your website itself.  Knowing how much traffic to your site might be "fun" information, but it is generally useless.

Lets look at this in more depth.

If I were to tell you, "You have had one hundred people visit your website today" what did I really tell you?  Can you use that information in any way?  This is about as far as you can get with most stats programs.

With a slightly more "advanced" (expensive) stats program or log analyzer, you can go one step deeper. Now suppose I told you, "You have had one hundred visitors to your website, and of those, four of them purchased your product!

But still, do I really have any new information? I could have paid as much as $500.00 for one of these programs, and yet what have I really learned that I didn't know before?

You might say, "Carl, now you know how many sales you had." Didn't I already know that? I can always check my bank account to see how many sales I had, right? I can use a really basic hit counter from 1992 if I want to see how much traffic I have had. What's the point?

Still, I don't have any useful information. I cannot apply that in any way to my business.

With yet a more advanced stats program, I can finally reach information that is of some use to me. Suppose I told you, "The ad you sent yesterday received one hundred visitors and two sales. The ad you sent the day before yesterday received twenty visitors and one sale."

Ok great, now finally I have some information I can use, right?

This information my friend is considered the "best" tracking technology has to offer. I can now decide to keep my "profitable" ad the one that had one sale per twenty visitors, and get rid of the "useless" ad the one that had two sales per hundred visitors.

Or wait a second.  Did I make the right choice?  What if that "one sale" was a fluke maybe the ad that got 2 sales is actually better. How can I know?

Unfortunately, with traditional stats software I cannot. I can only guess and hope my guess is correct.

This isn't the worst part. If I am promoting someone else's website as an affiliate, I cannot even obtain this basic information!

So now what? We just made a decision to keep the "profitable" ad (we hope its profitable at least) and to get rid of the ad that "wasn't getting results." This is what the stats programs tell us to do, right? So where do we go from here

Any ideas?

We are once again left in the dark. We might have paid hundreds of dollars for the stats programs that have brought us to this point, but what do we REALLY know? We are back to square one!

Each day now, you can log in see your ads doing well see how many visitors and sales you are getting including which ads they came from and then close your reports with a smile on your face (or a frown). If things aren't going as well as you would like, oh well. There is no further information available to you from these stats programs.

It doesn't matter how many times you log in and look at your reports, you will not grow an inch. This takes us to our next secret.

"The world's first and only online business intelligence service."

Secret #3 : Reports Wont Change Your Conversion Rate!

As you have already seen, today's stats software even the more expensive variety is extremely limited in what it can tell you, and even more limited when it comes to giving you useful marketing information.

As a result, you are limited when it comes to how you can possibly apply this information to help your business. All of these stats programs boast "powerful reports" right? You tell me, how powerful is a report when all you can do is look at it?

Lets for a minute focus on something more valuable to you. Do you want to make more money online? Of course you do. So I tell you what, here are two very simple steps that if you follow them, you are guaranteed that's right, guaranteed to make more money online. In fact, you can keep following these two steps over and over and your business will keep growing!

Here they are:

Step 1:

Increase your website's conversion rate.

Step 2:

Increase the amount of quality traffic coming to your website.

If you will follow these two steps you have a guaranteed way to easily increase your income. I will show you how to do this in a little while.

Lets look this process in action, so that you can see for yourself how effective this really is.

A website that sells a product for ten dollars receives one hundred visitors a day, and each day that website makes one sale. That means this website has a 1% conversion rate (one sale per hundred visitors). That website is therefore making ten dollars a day (one hundred visitors, one sale per hundred, and ten dollars a sale).

Now here is the same website after increasing its conversion rate and increasing the amount of quality traffic it is receiving.

This same website now gets 200 visitors a day, and has a conversion rate of 2%. That is, now this website is making two sales per hundred visitors, and is now therefore making four sales each day. Four sales at ten dollars a sale means this website is now making forty dollars a day instead of ten dollars a day.

This website is now making four times as much money.

As you can see, if you raise your conversion rate and/or the amount of quality traffic coming to your website, you have just increased your revenue. It is as simple as that.

Now, you might be saying, "Carl, I already knew that! The trick is how on earth do I increase my conversion rate?" Virtually everyone who markets online understands the importance of their conversion rate.

The reason it is such a mystery and the reason why it is so difficult to get a better conversion rate, all comes down to the information being given to you. If you were given the right information, you could easily figure out WHY your conversion rate is not doing as good as you would like, and then you could apply that information to make changes to your website and therefore increase your conversion rate.

Now, it goes without saying that you absolutely cannot get more quality traffic to your website nor can you possibly increase your conversion rate unless you have the right information. So where exactly do we get this information? We get it from our web stats program, right?

So lets begin...

Lets go ahead and increase our conversion rate. Where do we start? Well lets first find out what our conversion rate actually is.

"Web stats program how many visitors did I get today, and how many sales?"

"Carl, today you received one hundred visitors and one sale therefore you have a 1% conversion rate."

Ok great off to a good start. This expensive stats program (so far anyways) is doing what I want. Now, where do we go from here? Any ideas?

Dead End!

Our web stats program can tell us nothing more. Moreover, I could look at report after report after report and it will not change a single thing. My sales will remain exactly the same as they were. My traffic levels will stay about the same. My conversion rate will stay the same.

Nice "powerful reports" eh?

You see, a statistics report is designed to do one thing show you the "status quo". This is what the whole science of statistics is about. Again remember that these services originated not from tested marketing principles and strategies, but from curiosity. This is one of the fundamental reasons why these services are pretty useless when it comes to marketing.

Is this really what you want? Is this what you "hired" your web stats program to do for you? Of course not.

If you were to hire a business consultant, and they were to offer you the following advice, what would you do?

"Ahh.. thanks for the five hundred dollars. Lets have a look at your business wow its not doing that great. Your conversion rate is 1% and you are getting about a hundred visitors each day. It seems that this particular ad is the one you should keep, but I am not entirely sure. That's all the information I have for you. Good bye"

Would you keep them on? Of course not! No doubt you would feel quite ripped off.

As business owners, we do not want to hear the problem, we want to hear the solution! We don't want to be told what things are we want to be told WHY things are, and how they can change for the better.

Up until now, the only information any website owner could really rely on is what we have talked about. How much traffic, how many sales, and which ads are responsible for those sales.

Of course, this is providing the website is yours. If you are promoting an affiliate website, than even this information - as basic as it is will not be available to you. For that, all you can really find out is which ads are sending traffic. Of course, traffic is not sales.

Secret #4 : Traffic doesn't make you sales -- Your website makes you sales!

The myth of "Get traffic, and you will get sales" has negatively impacted every layer of online business. No matter how much traffic you are getting, it will be your website in the end not your traffic that makes sales.

Because so many traditional statistics and analysis software focuses entirely on traffic, today's marketers are operating with one hand tied behind their back.

Lets talk about this. If I tell you that a website is getting one hundred thousand hits a month, can you tell me how much money that website is making? Of course not! Traffic is only a very small piece of the overall picture.

Succeeding online consists of much more than simply getting lots of traffic to a website. Even a small amount of quality traffic can do extremely well if you have a strong selling website. Moreover strong websites, that is websites with a high conversion rate, will generate more traffic just from word of mouth advertising!

This is one of the reasons why it is so critical to first focus on your website, and only then focus on your traffic. You will hear me say this a lot. Traffic must come second place to your website's conversion rate.

Simply put, if your website is causing 5% of all the people who visit to buy from you, then there will be more people telling others about your website. Therefore, your site will naturally grow! Its that simple.

This is especially true if your website has an affiliate program. If you do not already have an affiliate program on your website, you should strongly consider implementing one. Affiliate programs let others market your website for you, and then you pay affiliates once they get you a sale.

However, there is a catch. No serious affiliate is going to promote your website unless your website has a strong conversion rate. It all goes right back to what we just talked about. First, get a strong conversion rate. Then other things will follow.

Here are just a few excellent reasons why you should focus on getting a strong conversion rate BEFORE you focus on increasing your traffic.

1. More people to your site will be "sold" therefore they will be recommending your website and telling their friends about it even if they personally do not buy. 2. Higher conversion rates are "super affiliate" magnets. You will find people approaching you asking if they can promote your website for commissions. 3. The traffic you do send will be worth more. You will make more sales with the exact same amount of traffic. 4. Your value per visitor (value per click or VPC) is higher, therefore you can afford to spend more in your pay per click advertising. 5. It gives you a great competitive advantage. You can spend less advertising dollars and get more sales.

There are many other reasons. But suffice it to say, this should be your number one concern.

If you focus on having a strong website, then traffic is far less important. Strong websites will naturally grow. It takes very little effort. On the other hand, weak websites will never grow they will just keep on shrinking until they are gone.

This is a key difference between marketers just starting out, and successful internet marketers. In today's market, successful online business owners do not rely only on traffic stats to measure success. They rely on action-oriented information that they can easily apply to their business to see real results. They rely on information that can be used to create a stronger sales process thereby increasing their conversion rate.

Let me make this clear. The ONLY way you will ever be able to see better results from your online marketing, is to apply action-oriented information to your sales process. You absolutely must use action-oriented information that can be directly applied to your marketing. Without this, you cannot succeed online!

What do I mean when I say "action-oriented"? To succeed online, you must be able to apply USEFUL information to make CHANGES to your business. Without this ability, all of your efforts are in vain.

Lets go back to our business consultant analogy. As we already discussed, no business consultant on the planet will tell you, "Your business is not doing well. I have no more information."

Rather, a good business consultant will take the time to do the necessary research. They will study your business carefully. They will examine what is working, and what is not working. They will discover your weaknesses and your strengths. Then, more importantly, they will come up with a clear "action plan" which you can use to easily improve your business.

A good business consultant will focus much more on making your overall sales process STRONGER, and only THEN focus on getting you more exposure. It should be the same for you and your own online business. First focus on getting a strong sales process, and only then focus on your traffic. A fire cannot ignite until the right fuel is in place.

You can think about online marketing much like a camp fire. If the logs are dry and arranged properly, with the right amount of kindling, all it takes is a small match to cause the whole fire to start. You never have to throw another match once it catches. All you have to do is ensure that there is enough fuel and the fire will burn constantly.

Your website sales process is the fuel in the fire. If the fuel is bad, the fire absolutely will not start no matter how much time and effort you put into it. If the fuel is good, then it takes only one small spark to cause a huge fire. A good website will grow much the same way as a good camp fire will grow.

First focus on making your website as strong as it can be. Then just one small ad could be the spark it takes to cause your business to soar to levels you never before thought possible.

Traditional stats programs and ad trackers will tell you, "Just get lots of traffic then get rid of the ads not making you money!" This is entirely backwards! Before you can even think about this step, you must focus on getting your website up to speed.

If your website sales process is not strong, you can drive millions of visitors to your website, and then a few days later your website will be just as dry as it was. On the other hand, a strong sales process will cause even a few visitors to tell their friends, to tell their friends, and before you know it you are doing extremely well!

I have seen so many aspiring entrepreneurs who have a great idea, but their website just doesn't sell. How do they handle this? More often than not, they will keep trying to get more and more traffic to their site. What they should be focusing on, is making their website sales process stronger. Then they will not need to spend so much time and money on getting traffic. The traffic will flow naturally.

Statistics are nothing more than a bunch of fancy numbers drawing a picture of your business. It is just like a self portrait. You might say to yourself, "Hmm my website isn't selling as good as I would like." Then you might spend hours trying to figure out why. "Maybe my sales letter isn't being read." Or "Maybe my order form isn't working." In the end, you are just guessing.

No matter how much traffic you get to your site, the strength of your website and only the strength of your website will get you sales.

Secret #5 : Traffic Trends are NOT Visitor Trends!

Do you know what the last five hundred visitors to your website actually did while they were there? Did they take the time to read your sales page? How many visited your order form? What exactly caused people to accept, or reject your offer?

Do you know? If not, you are not alone.

I would imagine that while you probably cannot answer these questions, you can easily tell me how many visitors you have had, how many sales you have had, and probably even which ads were responsible for your sales.

Why is that?

You have been being fed the wrong information. You see, visitors to your website are human beings just like you. They are not numbers. When you look at your traffic as a number, you completely miss the "human element."

People who end up buying from you are different than those who do not. No statistics service is going to be able to capture this. It might be that those who ended up buying tended to visit a certain page, it might be that they were already looking for what you had to offer, it might be that they read more of your sales letter, or any number of different factors.

Lets look at these factors. Lets figure out what it really takes to understand visitors to your website and what makes them do what they do.

Suppose I were to tell you that your conversion rate is 2%. What am I really saying here? I am saying that on average, you are getting two sales for every hundred visitors to your website. What does this really mean? How can you use this information?

Am I saying that for every hundred visitors, you are guaranteed to make two sales? Of course not. Does this mean that if you send a thousand random visitors to your website, you are absolutely going to make at least twenty sales? No!

What we are saying here, is that of all the traffic to your website, roughly 2% of all those visitors match certain criteria which makes them more likely to buy. This criteria will differ from website to website.

Bottom line if you can know what sales do that non-sales do not do, you have an easy formula for targeting your website more specifically at those individuals who are likely to buy from you! In order to do this effectively, you must be able to separate your traffic into groups!

Lets imagine for a minute that you are in a room with one hundred people in it each of them at a computer and each of them looking at the front page of your website. Lets imagine you can look over their shoulders one by one. How would you pick out those likely to buy versus those who were not likely to buy?

Within the first five or ten seconds, you have your first clue. The odds are that many of the hundred people have left your site by this point they just were not interested to begin with.

So here we have established one criteria how long are people staying on your site?

Now, through the corner of your eye, you notice someone who is intently reading your sales letter. You can see them scrolling through the sales letter and they are spending a good deal of time reading every word.

Here we have another criteria how much of your sales letter are people reading?

Now, lets freeze everything at this point.

Of the original hundred, lets say seventy left your site before even reading the first sentence they were just not interested. Of the thirty, ten left when they visited a particular part of your sales letter. Of the twenty remaining, five left after reading your entire sales letter, and just realizing they didn't have the money to buy right now odds are they will return later. Of the fifteen remaining, ten left once they got to your order form. Of the five remaining, three left before they finished filling out your order form. End result you got two sales!

Do you see how much more complex this is than simply saying "2% of your visitors buy"? There is much more involved. No stats service is going to capture this information for you. To improve your sales process, you absolutely must understand how different visitors interact with your website.

Soon I will show you a really easy way of doing this.

This example illustrates something very important. If you could now go back in time, what changes would you make to your website to get more of those hundred people to buy? Well this would entirely depend on the different criteria we just spoke about.

The point is, if you are not able to see what the PEOPLE on your website actually do, you cannot make any real marketing decisions. You can only guess. It is absolutely critical to understand the "human element" to your marketing.

Once you know what your visitors are doing on an individual basis especially sales versus non sales, you can easily make changes to your website that will result in more sales. You just simply fix the areas that are causing sales to be lost, and you emphasize those areas of your site that are getting sales so that they can do better still.

If you can clearly see what your VISITORS do its far more useful information than seeing what mere numbers do.

Carefully examine your visitor's actions on your website. See how visitors who buy differ from visitors who do not buy. Act on this information and you will have a far stronger website than you would have had otherwise.

Lets focus on another major factor when it comes to visitors buying from you. Most of your sales will not result from first-time visitors. Most people will have to see your offer at least seven times before they will actually buy.

Many times someone visits your website, becomes interested, but does not buy until a later date. If you can know who these people are, you can spend more time advertising to them to get them to return. The more repeat visitors you have, the more likely it is you will get sales that would otherwise have been impossible.

This key fact takes us to our next secret.

Secret #6 : The best places to advertise may not get sales right away!

As we just discussed, marketing is psychology. You absolutely must know what is going on in the minds of your visitors in order to properly construct your sales process to be as effective as possible.

Your ads must be thought of in the same way. Using only statistics, you might send two ads and see the following:

Ad 1 : 100 visitors, 2 sales

Ad 2 : 20 visitors, 1 sale

Now, let me ask you, is this enough information to say "I am going to drop the first ad and stay with the second" ?

Of course not! It might be that of the twenty visitors, that one sale was just a fluke. How can you really know which ad is best to advertise in?

Simple. Find out the INTEREST LEVEL resulting from the ads. This will indicate to you if an ad is grabbing the right audience. Repeat advertising to these types of traffic sources will almost certainly result in more sales.

Lets examine this.

Of the two ads we just spoke of:

Ad 1's visitors were somewhat interested. They typically read most of your sales letter, many of them visited your order form, and quite a few stayed at least ten minutes on your website.

Ad 2's visitors typically closed their web browsers as soon as they arrived. One of them however, was quite interested and went through and purchased your product. All the rest, were clearly not interested.

The information you just saw is not obtainable from any statistics program. And yet, this is truly the information you need. I cannot emphasize this enough. Your ads are only as effective as their target audience not the amount of traffic, not even the conversion rate.

The conversion rate is only going to be accurate once you have ran an ad about seven to ten times. Which makes the best business sense, to run an untested ad seven times, or to see the INTEREST level of the first ad run?

If you can see which ads get interested visitors, you can keep mining that traffic source until the people eventually are ready to buy.

If on the other hand, you hit the wrong ad multiple times, you will likely just end up with a very angry group of people who are tired of hearing about what you are offering.

Secret #7 : Ad Trackers, Hit Counters, and Web Stats Programs Do NOT Want You to Find Clickalyzer!

Lets go over some of the things we have discussed.

Successful online marketing consists of four critical factors:

1. How much traffic are you getting to your website (exposure)? 2. What is the quality (interest level) of that traffic? 3. Where is the traffic coming from (ads) 4. How effective is your website (or affiliate program's website) at converting that traffic into sales? (conversion)

As we discussed, these four elements form the building blocks of any successful online business. If any of these four elements are weak, the entire sales process is weak. Just like in any machine, your sales process will only be as strong as its weakest link.

Stats programs came about as a way to show marketers how much traffic they are getting. They were built on the flawed assumption that if you just get lots and lots of traffic you will succeed.

We now know that this is not the way to do things. We have seen the importance of building a strong website first, discovering what visitors are interested in second, finding the right places to advertise third, and only as the last step focus on driving more traffic to the website.

Moreover, we showed that if you only complete this first step (building a strong website with a good conversion rate), that the other steps will flow naturally just like a log catches fire.

I know what you have been wondering for this entire report "Carl, where on earth do I get the information you are talking about?"

Everything you just read prompted our company Clickalyzer to shatter the standards in online tracking and testing. We decided that since no one else was going to give aspiring marketers the information they needed to succeed, that we would.
