Interesting Modalities - Part Two
Ayurvedic Medicine
Ayurvedic medicine is not that well known in North America, from what I can tell. We have a prominent ayurvedic practitioner and teacher in Columbus, Ohio named Hari Sharma. Deepak Chopra in California also teaches and practices ayurvedic medicine.
Ayurvedic medicine comes from two Hindi (Indian) words ayur, which means "life" and veda, which means "knowledge." It is a system of learning about life and how a person can make their life better. As part of that, health is a big consideration, and heavily emphasized in ayurveda. Ayurvedic medicine includes dozens of modalities, most well known are yoga, Indian herbal medicine and meditation. But there are many other facets: diet, digestion, sleep, daily routine, environment, massage, vibration and sound therapy and breathing exercises.
I think of two systems in holistic health that are very complete, include many modalities and are tested by time for thousands of years: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and ayurvedic medicine. TCM is more well-known in North America, but ayurveda is becoming more popular as people find out the benefits it can have.
