ComputerWorld got a look/talk about Sun's new Linux desktop, due in the fall. Still using Sun Linux (not Red Hat), it will have GNOME, Mozilla and Evolution--with StarOffice, of course. Look forward to seeing it.

The City launched its two Wi-Fi hotspots in two downtown parks today. The TV cameras dutifully showed up, taking pictures of a befuddled-looking Mayor John Norquist (who probably wasn't confused at all) and a few other folks typing at their laptops.

Visitors should definitely check the area out. Pere Marquette Park, named for the French priest who "discovered" the area, is right next door to the Milwaukee County Historical Society and across the street from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel building. Summer concerts on Wednesday night, perfect for blogging (if only I had a laptop). Cathedral Square, named for the seat of the Milwaukee Archdiocese, St. John's Cathedral, hosts the annual Bastille Days festival in July. Just across the street, another Milwaukee institution--Real Chili ("It's not just for breakfast anymore.").

Speaking of John Norquist, this lame-duck mayor is ducking out a few months early. He's headed to Chicago to become grand poobah of the Congress for the New Urbanism. He'll be good in the job, as long as he doesn't harass the help.

Yesterday, we set up the network so I could share my son-in-law's new cable-modem. With some (minimal) hassle and two calls to tech support, we are now broadband!

Unfortunately, the new D-Link DWL-520+ wireless connection does not have a native Linux driver, though this is in process (or so D-Link says). Meanwhile, I'll be testing an open-source driver that works on SuSE 8.1 and 8.2, but without a proven success on 8.0 (which, of course, is what I've got). Cross your fingers.

One reason I've been anxious to get the cable connection up was so I could do a safe, speedy apt-get dist-upgrade to 8.2. Couldn't get SpamAssassin loaded on the 8.0 system, but it's included in 8.2. Ever the complications....

Blogging should be a little less painful now, though. Both from the reading and writing sides. I will be spending a lot more time in Windows now, sadly.
