This post's title wasn't meant to be a Ray Davies reference, but there it is anyway.

It's been six days since we started moving in to the new place, and it's starting to look halfway decent (if you ignore all the empty boxes that are starting to accumulate). But there have been several bad omens:

  • Sunday night Milwaukee got its first measurable snow of the season, and ever since the temperatures have been in the single digits and worse (Fahrenheit, that is).
  • We've tried getting an extra set of keys made, but one key never gets made properly (after three attempts!).
  • Yesterday, the car didn't start (see the temp reference above). We got it jumped (thanks, Triple A!), then took it to Sears. They replaced our battery, but told us the alternator was getting ready to die too. That, of course, would cost twice as much to replace. Oh joy!
  • Today, the cable guy came. Everything was going well with our new digital setup, until he had to get into the landlord's part of the basement. Needless to say, he couldn't get away to open that, so we're stuck until all three of us (us, cable guy and landlord) can meet. Meanwhile, my antenna is not picking up any UHF channels. At least the new washer and dryer arrived, and appears to be in working order. We still got to see West Wing, too.

Things will get better; it'll be 0 Celsius in a day or two, they say. Fingers crossed.
