Followup to the story blogged here last week on the Texas Unitarian Universalist congregation who didn't get a state tax exemption. The Comptroller's lawyer made Carole Strayhorn listen to reason, and the Dennison UUs are again a religion in good standing. See the Fort Worth Star-Telegram story (registration required).

As usual when someone does something dumb in public life, Ms. Strayhorn blamed her staff  for the mixup:

Strayhorn spokesman Mark Sanders said Strayhorn directed her staff to review the decision after questions were raised about it.

"She asked her general counsel to look into the matter and he overruled earlier staff decisions," Sanders said.

So cheers to Jesse Ancira, the comptroller's general counsel, for being a relatively logical human being. And thanks to Austin Cline, the Atheist guide at About.com, for the update.
