Service-oriented architecture getting more attention

The Global Justice Information Sharing comittee has been discussing the impact of service-oriented architectures as more agencies and companies get convinced that this is the way we need to be moving in implementing integrated justice information systems.  Hao He has published a recent article that plainly explains what service oriented architectures (SOA) seek to accomplish.  An easy to understand model is also on-line.  There are some useful examples also available on the web.

Michael Stevens describes the benefits of service oriented architectures.

While the elements of SOA are intuitively appropriate for integrated justice information systems, the design of such systems is still in an early stage as people struggle with the de-coupling that has to happen to move from earlier hard-wired connectivity to loosely coupled systems.  New designs will more and more be based on SOA concepts.

EII takes hold in enterprise systems development

IBM, webMethods acquisitions boost integration - Infoworld Staff. IBM and webMethods have each swallowed integration companies in order to nourish their respective offerings. At the same time, SeeBeyond has upgraded its suite, and an integration startup has thrown its first software product in the ring last week. [InfoWorld: Top News]  As these moves heat up, it is easy to see that larger companies have endorsed the concept of enterprise information integration as the new emerging technology to allow systems to interact.  While older incarnations such as EDI are still alive and viable, the work of new companies building disruptive technologies is being used as the basis for drastic expansion of the capabilities in EII.
