Federated Identification Management emerging as the winner

Now that Microsoft has joined other companies in supporting built-in tools for identity management, the further proliferation of systems with this capability as a native part of the systems software is going to be commonplace.  See Microsoft eyes ID management. To include distributed ID system in future Windows - Network World [Loosely Coupled news aggregator]

The power in these industry trends will be when federated systems emerge that create a trust relationship betweeen justice systems such that each system does the identification and authenication of its users and having done so allows access to other linked systems.  Microsoft, IBM, and others are doing a lot of research on federated systems for this very purpose, and the next round of new developments will make it easy to build federated systems as long as the fundamental trust between agencies can be established.
