$3.7 billion authorized for nano-technology research

The President signed the bill authorizing the expenditure of $3.7 billion over the next 5 years for research into the application of nanotechnology.  This is a significant increase and reflects the growing capability and promise of this breakthrough technology to impact just about every aspect of future technology applications.

Enterprise Architecture and Homeland Security

Brian Robinson writes in Federal Computer Week about the importance of enterprise architecture in state and local efforts to support homeland security measures.  This is exactly what many Federal agencies and the Global Information Sharing Advisory Committee have concluded, and the recognition of this principle now has lots of advocates.  NASCIO, the National Association of State CIO's, has produced some useful videos for persuading elected leaders of this reality and also explaining the importance of the concept to developers. Streaming versions of these videos are available.

New Report published on a national network for information sharing

The Markle Foundation has released a new report on "Creating a trusted network for information sharing" that advocates a networking model based on users sharing information with each other rather than a centralized model as has been the approach taken previously by the FBI and others.  This is the second report from a blue ribbon committee that Markle created to address homeland security and counter-terrorism issues.  It resonates with many of the beliefs expressed by local information network users and consumers and offers sound advice for Federal agencies engaged in determining how best to share information between Federal, state, and local agencies.
