SOA Comes of Age
When the major software engineering tool companies begin to offer tools to implement a particular capability or architectural concept, you know it has arrived. Now, for service oriented architecture (SOA), the serious market leaders have created tools to make it easy to construct an SOA in their environment. IBM has announced its service oriented modeling and architecture toolkit (SOMA) to help its customers transform business problems into an SOA environment. BEA, another major player in the provision of robust development environments, has announced its free Service-Oriented Architecture Readiness Self-Assessment tool, which enables enterprises to assess the maturity of their systems in regard to implementing SOAs. More recently, Sonic Software has unveiled new products for building SOAs based on its enterprise service bus technology.
There's even an SOA Executive Forum going on in San Jose to create a place to learn more about the rapid deployment of this phenomenon.
The March 14, 2005 issue of InfoWorld magazine contains what the editors call a "crystallization of the ideal enterprise, a prism with seven architectural views: secure, process-driven, pervasive, service-oriented, data-centric, needs-based, and open." Summary articles on each view are included, and this robust view of enterprise architecture covers all the bases for what needs to be designed in the justice information systems world. Every one of these dimensions is essential.
