Mac G5 Performance Information In case you didn't know, Apple has a new G5 computer. It is a 64 bit processor. Currently both Apples and Wintels use 32 bit processors. Don't get too excited, although NASA has tested it and found it to be a little faster than the Pentium 4 3GHz the true power of such a processor won't be found until there is 64 bit software. The new Panther version of Mac OS X is NOT going to be a 64 bit OS. Panther will implement a few features of 64 bit processing to get the ball rolling for software developers. G5 looks to be 'efficient and speedy'. The Power PC G5's power consumption "looks to be about three-fourths that of a P4 when clocked for comparable performance," Technology Editor Peter Coffee writes in an eWeek article. "... the G5's efficiency and speed may quickly spread its use from Apple's top tier throughout the rest of its line and may also make Apple a top-tier option for even the most performance-conscious users," he writes in the story, which looks at 64-bit computer processing.
