It has been awhile since I posted one of John Walker's Fish Reports on my stories page. Not that he hasn't kept sending them, or that they aren't worth reading. I've just been busy. Tell me you haven't.

In fact I'm so busy right now that I'm posting John's latest Fish Report instead of blogging something original, like maybe my take on the great Wisconsin feral cat debate, about which I have only this to say: Who'd want to wade into that claw-fest? To do so is a good way to lose friends and credibility, no matter which side of the issue you come down on. Suffice it to say that feral cats are a major problem here and across much of the country because of their heavy impact on game and songbirds. Suffice it to add that having an advertised open season on them isn't going to solve the problem. I mean, how many feral cats have you seen while out hunting? I don't mean driving on country roads, I mean actually hunting some type of game. Not many, I'll wager. So even if it were legal to shoot them (and it is currently not here in Cheeseland), there wouldn't be much impact. In fact, the harm done to the image of hunters by the perception that we are all out there stalking wild tabbies might well outweigh the benefits in terms of birdnests saved by the shooting of a few hundred cats by hunters each year. If you really want to help game and songbirds, take out a few skunks. I don't think too many people will complain.

Anyway, check out the latest Fish Report on my stories page. It's a Yooper's litany of "lessons Mom taught me." It might even be original! (John wouldn't just copy something off the Internet, would he?)

Later...
