Rebecca's Blog
Mostly news stories or articles of interest in the future to me. I'll eventually get around to adding my own ideas and stories on a more regular basis.

qotd june 24. Thomas Jefferson: "Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances." [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]

My note from Sunday's B&N Trip:

If I get a PDA I should also get Man & Mache (was it really machine) Inc's FX100 (it's a cool roll-up keyboard)

Check out Plaxo.

"I am 4.35 out of 5. I'm constantly looking for that .65 more" (a Cisco ad)

Smart Women Req'd Reading:
"how to use what you've got to get what you want." - Marily Tam

"Use what you've got & other business lessons I learned from mom." - Barbara Cororan

"The architecture of all abundance.." - Leandera Carroll (i really shouldn't scribble)

"Kitchen Table Entrepreneurs" - Martha Shirk

"Leadership the Elanor Roosevelt Way" - Robin ???

By 2006 80% of all mobile phones will be supplied with Blue Tooth.  Maybe I should keep my crappy one until then.  heh.

Is the Exadia Groove, Groove Workspace 2.5

If I need venture capital funds there was a nice list (top 100 firms) in Entrepreneur Mag of 7/03.

9 am - noon - Toop internet usage hours

Maybe I should tutor again in my spare time.  Go to www.pta.org or ntatutor.org.  $18-35/hour is going rate.

Firing someone is often a reflection of the supervisor.  No one sets out to fail.  How could you have helped them?

You could sit around and focus on how your job feels like a dead-end or you could double-down.  Companies have fewer emploees so it's a great time to push your career.

Hiring for potential is out.  Hiring for expertise is in.

What men have been struggling with for years is that we prefer to dress casual, but we all know deep down that when we wear a suit, we make a better impression and appear to be more knowledgable and professional.

What motivates?  Challenging work, a sane supervisor, respectful colleagues & promise of career growth.

BE CREATIVE, DUMBASS.

Good is the enemy of great.  That is one of the key reasons why we have so litle that becomes great.  Few people attain great lives, in large part, because it is so so easy to settle for a good life.

Greatness is not a function of circumstance.  Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice.

To achieve greatness:
1.  Get the right people on and the wrong people off.
2.  You must find something you can be great at.
3.  Culture of discipline.  When you have disciplined people you don't need hierarchy or bureacracy or excessive control. When you combine a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship, you get the magical alchemy of great performance.
4.  Use technology as the primary means of igniting transformation.
5. It's not one moment, is a continuing push, building momentum

Create a climate where truth is heard.
1.  Lead with questions, not answers.
2.  Engage in dialogue & debate, not coercion.
3.  Conduct autopsies without blame.
4.  Build red-flag mechanisms.

Put your best people on your biggest opportunities, not your biggest problems.

I love to feel motivated.
