Urban Educ8r: A Wickerblog
This weblog is dedicated primarily to the discussion of Education issues and policies, as well as to chronicling the author's experiences as an inner-city school teacher. These days, the education discussion is too much in the hands of ignorant politicians merely doing what they need to gain re-election, and not enough in the hands of knowledgable professionals with first hand experience.

I am not surprised that my neighboring Cobb County, Georgia, has dropped their plan to furnish all middle and high school students with a laptop. It did take a lawsuit against the school board to terminate the plan. The rest of us (neighboring counties) were jaws-to-the-floor that a school system would consider doling out 63,000 Apple iBooks. That's right. 63,000. I just couldn't wait to see what they did after Lord knows how many thousands of them went missing. But alas, a superior court judge spared us the amusement.

There is more to the story, as well. Apparently, when the school board approved the plan, the people of
Cobb were not informed that it would require a special sales tax. The old bait and swith. We're going to give all the kids laptops!...oh, and by the way, we have to raise your taxes to do it.

I think the county is going to appeal, however.
