The next version of Oracle will be called Oracle 10G, with the 'G' standing for Grid Computing.
Oracle 10G is due to be formally launched at Oracleworld in September, but details of the new name leaked out recently when the Oracleworld Paris site was made public.Further details of other new features are only rumours at this stage, although this report at eWeek quotes "hyped speed, scalability that will support petabyte databases, enhanced XML database and Web services support, expanded clustering support, and additional grid-computing features."
As with previous major releases of the core database, it'll probably be around June or July 2004 before we actually get our hands on a copy of 10G, and then with versions for Unix/Linux coming before Windows. Whilst some are concerned about the value of upgrading so soon after 9i, the fact that 10G is likely to include major improvments to management and reporting tools will hopefully make the upgrade seem more attractive. Me? I'm looking forward to the settling down of the new-to-9i Business Intelligence features, improved GUI tools for 9i OLAP, and further improvements to scalability, ETL and manageability for data warehousing projects.
