It strikes me that all these social networking sites (Google's Orkut for example) are nothing more than Old Boy's networks, high school cliques, exclusive clubs in electronic version with membership by "invitation only".
Maybe underneath they need to know the connections between people to track something or other? In terms of social interaction, they seem to me to be reactionary, not revolutionary or that is least the impression one gets as an outsider. Maybe I am missing something?
