Wi-Fi handover at 205 miles per hour. [ITU Strategy and Policy Unit Newslog][via Telecom.paper]
NEC's researchers have successfully tested software which provides for handovers between Wi-Fi access points, using cars travelling at extremely fast speeds. The test was carried out at a car test track in Tokyo in October 2003. The software allows for a quick sign-on and handover between the access points. In the test, four 802.11b access points were located at intervals of 500 meter along the track and linked to a router installed with NEC's handover software. A car moving at 205 miles per hour went past the access points while software managed the handover from one to the next. The technology was developed for use in intelligent transport systems (ITS), and may be used to retain Internet connections with trains and cars whilst in motion.
