USA, Japan sign joint missile defense deal (AP).

In a photo provided by the U.S. Navy, a Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) is launched from the Aegis cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67), during a joint Missile Defense Agency, U.S. Navy ballistic missile flight test, Thursday, June 22, 2006, off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii. Two minutes later, the SM-3 intercepted a separating ballistic missile threat target, launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. The test was the seventh intercept, in eight program flight tests, by the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense, the maritime component of the 'Hit-to-Kill' Ballistic Missile Defense System, being developed by the Missile Defense Agency. The maritime capability is designed to intercept short to medium-range ballistic missile threats in the midcourse phase of flight. Pre-launch strike on N. Korea unlikely (AP).

An undated photograph released by the Missile Defense Agency shows the Joint National Integration Center at Schriever Air Force Base near Colorado Springs, Colo., date unknown. The center monitors missile defense. All eyes - and ears - are on North Korea as the United States and its allies are watching from land, air, sea and space to learn whether the communist nation is preparing to test fire a long-range missile. (AP Photo/Missile Defense Agency)The U.S. suggests it has limited ability to shoot a North Korean missile out of the sky and spurned suggestions of a pre-emptive strike on the ground. Still, it warns the communist Koreans would pay a cost for a missile launch.
