FINDING JOBS VERSUS MIND GAMES Recently I posted a job on several of the leading job boards for a Thin Gauge Thermoforming Salesperson in the Chicagoland area. I try to reply to everyone who answers my job postings. I replied to one candidate who sent his resume saying "Thanks for responding to our posting for the Thin Gauge Thermoforming Salesperson position in Chicago but our client company will not consider anyone for the position who does not have thermoforming sales experience. I am sorry we are unable to help you with your job search at this time. Best wishes with your career." Shortly thereafter I received the following email, "That is ok Jim I just wanted to see if they would look at thermoforming manufacturing experience and the sales experience I have maybe a fit, But maybe I don't want to work for someone with no vision."
I was somewhat surprised by the response from the candidate. In the first place, I don't remember any reference to thermoforming manufacturing experience but even if there was, there was nothing to link sales experience to the thermoforming manufacturing experience. Having sold nuts and bolts at one point in ones career and having manufactured thermoformed components does not make a thermoforming salesperson. The reason the company wants a thermoforming salesperson is because that individual already has contacts in the industry and knows the needs and requirements of those contacts. In fact, a person in our office suggested that the thermoforming company hire someone with only thermoforming manufacturing experience and have them do sales. This was a disaster and now we are back searching for a thermoforming sales person.
The purpose of this tirade is to point out that the individual still has the responsibility to sell himself or herself to the company and show some logical progression that makes them fit for the job. Even if we return to the era (which I doubt) that anyone with a pulse gets hired, if you do not present your skills correctly you might not get the job you would have really wanted. If you want to play mind games I recommend BRAIN BUILDING by Marilyn vos Savant who has an I.Q. of about 220, which is a lot higher than mine. Otherwise look at the job posting and modify your job posting to respond to those listed needs and requirements.
