Don't give up, Don't Ever Give Up, Don't Ever Give up....................................................................................... Sir Winston Churchill was scheduled to give a commencement address at a small eastern university. Needless to say this commencement drew a large crowd that was anticipating a stirring speech. Winston Churchill came to the podium and said, "Don't give up, don't ever, ever give up" and sat back down. This turned out to be one of his most remembered speeches because of its timeless truth. I say all of that to say this, the worst of the jobless recovery is over but there are still many, many qualified and skilled job seekers still looking for a job. I believe it is always darkest before the dawn so now is not the time to give up.
I have a candidate that has been out of work for six months and I just recently scheduled an interview for him that would actually be a promotion from his previous job. Do I believe he will get the job? The answer is no because I believe he has given up on himself. I have him prepared to go to the interview, in a suit, and he will have read the company's Web Site which is quite good but despite my best efforts, I cannot get him excited about the interview. He has excellent credentials for the job but unless he gets more motivated than he is now he will not get the job. It does not help that the company president he will be meeting is very outgoing and a real take charge type of individual.
There may be many reasons that you have not landed that job you wanted. You may have not been a good cultural fit, the company many have decided not to fill the position or you may not have had all the qualifications the company wanted. Companies with a list of 10 requirements expect recruiters to deliver someone with 11. So much of the interview process is beyond the job seekers control it is not a reflection on the quality of the individual when he or she does not get the job. The important thing is not to give up and keep on trying. You only need one job offer to get the position you want.
Please, now that the employment climate is about to improve, don't give up!
