WHERE ARE THE MANUFACTURING JOBS? As a third party recruiter, I get hundreds of resumes per month from people that want to relocate to the Carolinas. If I place all of them in North or South Carolina, I am quite sure the Southeast coast would probably sink into the ocean. I recruit primarily for the plastics industry which is the fourth largest category of manufacturing in the United States. The first is of course automotive and plastics are tied very closely to automotive. I just saw the following table listing the top ten plastics processing states (in billions of sales dollars) in the January 19, 2004 issue of PLASTICS NEWS:
STATE 2000 2001 2002
California $14.1 $14.1 $13.1 Ohio 12.0 11.4 11.2 Texas 10.2 9.9 10.1 Illinois 10.5 10.1 9.8 Michigan 10.4 10.0 9.4 Pennsylvania 8.8 8.5 8.3 Indiana 7.5 7.0 7.3 Wisconsin 5.4 5.3 4.9 North Carolina 5.3 5.3 4.9 New Jersey 5.3 5.1 4.9
U.S. Total $151.6 $146.4 $143.9
This indicates to me the reason many of us do not have jobs is that we are looking for them in the wrong places.
