Impressions, II (Who let the dogs out?)

In our recent travels I found a very interesting difference between New Zealand and South Africa. That I noticed this difference is entirely due to my decision to start running.

This is that difference:
When you run in South Africa all the dogs in the yards that you run past snarl and bark at you, making you very happy that there are big fences around all of the properties to keep these vicious hounds safely away from you.  Here in New Zealand the dogs do not make a sound. No barking, no growling. None come hurtling out the open gates to chase you and nip at your ankles. None jump up against fences trying to get to you. Here, in New Zealand, you run in peace.

But on my run this last weekend, finally, a lone dog barked at me as I ran past the newly erected tall fence around its home. It is a dog that belongs to the South African family who have just moved in to the house at the bottom of the road. Go figure.

Why this difference between the two countries? I can only wonder.

Post Script: My decision to start running is one that I have now rationalised. I will share this insight with the world. Shortly.
