Geelong Advertiser _ Simon Townley - CHAMPION Geelong walker Nathan Deakes finished a gallant second in atrocious conditions in the second leg of the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Portugal at the weekend.
Deakes finished just 13 seconds behind Spain's European champion Francisco Fernandez - the man who beat him for the silver medal in Athens - after the two had been neck and neck for the majority of the distance.
Heavy rain soaked the competitors for most of the race, the second of the six-race series.
``Even though I finished second, I'm very happy with my performance,'' he said yesterday.
