Packing everything up to reluctantly go back to Bellevue this morning. I ventured outside long enough to get my car into the line-up for the ferry. Other than that, it's the usual ritual: collect up the garbage, turn down the thermostats, empty out the fridge, tidy up. The anal retentive in me made a checklist of all the things that I'm supposed to do (it's in Excel, no less, with lots of pre-printed copies in a folder up here). It's actually pretty important, when you might not be back for a month or more, not to leave perishables in the refrigerator, or water sitting in the kettle. Dumb stuff like that, easy to forget, which is why I made a list in the first place.
Here's a neat little happy thing: it turns out that there's a company that is offering paid WiFi internet access in marinas and resorts in the pacific northwest -- including Friday Harbor. I live just close enough to the harbor that I get pretty decent connectivity. Yesterday and this morning was my trial run; I paid $6.95 for 24 hours, just to see over a day how the connectivity went. It's actually been great and very consistent. Given the choice of $50/month for DSL, or $300/yr for this, I think I'll choose this. And given that I have a cellphone that gets great coverage here, I can probably disconnect my landline here.
OK, my ship is coming in -- literally -- in about 15 minutes. Time to wrap up the last few things and say goodbye to my island escape.
