Two and a half days into my Hawaii solo vacation.
I got here Saturday afternon. The trade winds were a-blowing, which made the flight in a little rough. Also very breezy outside. Trade winds are a very interesting thing -- a constant blowing, not the up and down we are used to on the mainland. It's easy to see where it got its name; it would be very handy for the trading vessels of olden days.
Mostly I'm doing a whole lot of nothing. Lots of reading -- I finished a book I was midway through on the flight here Saturday, and yesterday read another entire book. I drove back to Kahului to find a Borders Books this morning to re-stock...
I've settled into a routine of one planned activity a day. Sunday it was a massage, today a haircut, tomorrow morning I'm going snorkeling in Molokini. The rest of the day is some spontaneous mix of read, sleep, swim, and sit out in the sun. Oh, and drink fruity alcoholic beverages -- it is the tropics, after all.
This is the first vacation I've taken by myself in, well, a very long time. It's weird. I'm not being particularly social -- occasioanlly striking up the odd conversation in the jacuzzi or in a bar. But mostly I'm enjoying spending time by myself, on my own schedule.
I splurged a little bit and got a room within earshot of the ocean. One of my favorite things is sleeping with the windows open and listening to the waves crashing onto the beach. And fortunately it's warm enough to do that here (unlike Seattle).
I'd forgotten how expensive everything is here. But despite that, and how much I miss my kids, it's been a great vacation so far.
