Recently I read A Walk in the Woods, by Bill Bryson.
The book is the Bryson's talk of his decision to walk to Appalachian Trail, a 2,150-mile hiking trail that runs from Georgia to Maine. He intermixes with this a bit of the history of the trail, it ups and downs, and the culture of the people associated with it (hikers and maintainers alike).
More than anything else, the book is a referendum on Americans -- their desire at one level to preserve nature while at another level failing to understand or appreciate it at all.
Bryson spins some engaging tales of hiking on the trail; the good, the bad, and the very, very bad. He comes off as a bit curmudgeonly and sanctimonious at times, quick to judge and to jump to conclusions. Nevertheless, it's a fun and educational read.
